We Love Bounce interview with Caz Wood

1. Thinking back to your first ever set, where was it and what was the first track you ever played?
My first ever set was in March 2006, playing at the Bang Bar in Basingstoke. I remember being very nervous about playing but very excited at the same time! My first tune was “Such a Good Feeling” by Miss Behavin, and it was on vinyl. The set went well, I remember it feeling very surreal to be in control of the music of the club and having to keep tell myself to concentrate, especially at one point when I took the needle off the wrong record and stopped the music!! The tune was Carte Blanche and I was so caught up in the moment I accidently picked the needle off of it instead of the tune that had just played out! It certainly made the set memorable!!

2. How did you get into DJing?
I started djing in 2002, when I got my first decks – a pair of Technic 1210’s. My boyfriend (Wain Johnstone) and I both decided we wanted to learn so we bought the basics. I had always had a keen interest in dance music and I would buy all the latest dance albums before I was old enough to go out clubbing. It was then when I started to go out to nights and events that I would see DJ’s play and was further inspired by them to learn how to DJ. Watching DJ’s like Lisa Pin Up and Rob Tissera play made me want to get up there and do the same! So we set up our decks in the spare room of our house and then proceeded to self teach ourselves how to mix (which wasn’t easy!). A year or so later we bought ourselves some CD decks and as more and more music became available online to download the more time we would spend on our decks mixing and making new demos. In 2006 I got my first gig playing out, and since then I have played for promoters and events that back in 2002 I could only dream of playing for!

3. How did it feel to have one of your remixes played out on Radio One?
When my remix of “Take me Away” that I made with Technikal was played on Radio One, I was incredibly happy! The tune is very close to my heart after I had been kindly given the vocals from Rob Tissera, to remix the original RT Project tune. The original tune is one of my personal favourites and so to remix it was a dream come true! Both myself and Alf Bamford (Technikal) gave it a happy uplifting rift, yet still maintained some of its original elements. Once released, it reached Number 1 in the Trackitdown chart and was then played on Kutski’s Radio one show that week! His show is very reputable and pushes our scene very well, so it was a complete honour to have my tune represented on it!

4. What’s been the highlight of your DJing career so far?
There have been some pretty incredible moments in my djing career so far as I have had the opportunity to play some amazing venues and events including a Tidy Weekender, Main room at KoKo and Global Gathering! To pick out one is very hard but my most memorable would have to be my recent gig in Ibiza this year. It has always been a personal goal to play in Ibiza, so when Vicky Devine contacted me to play for her night Charlyz Angelz I couldn’t believe my luck!! Jetting off to another country with my record bag has always been a dream and so to fulfil that this year was incredible and a real highlight! The gig went really well, I’ll never forget that moment!

5. If you were a promoter for a night, what venue would you hire, which DJs would you book and would you have a dress code?
If budget were no object, I would hire Brixton Academy! This to me is the best venue in the UK, it’s got lots of places to explore and is a very grand venue! I would fill the line up with the best in hard dance dj’s including Lisa Pin Up, Rob Tissera, Andy Whitby (the usual clan!!) and make the nights a classics night and of course I’d be playing to in the main room too. I would then take inspiration from the hardstyle nights such as Defqon, and have an amazing light display of coloured lasers and pyrotechnics!! I love fancy dress themes so I would go for something super sexy like a glitzy ball!! Get everyone in sparkly glittery outfits, shimmery make up and sexy hair do’s!! I think that could work!! Finally, I would have the sexy Contagious dancers on the stage to do what they do best and wow the crowds!!

6. What is your definition of a good night out?
Good Company, Good Venue and DJ’s! The crowd is key to a good night, it doesn’t have to be huge but as long as everyone is have a good time and lots of my friends are out, then I know the night will be good!! A few vodka and lemonades will also help the night along ha ha!

7. Aspiring DJs always have a demo CD to hand, have any caught your attention recently?

FOID – I saw her play recently and was very impressed. Inspired by Lisa Pin Up, this DJ is fun bouncy and with a great personality to match she is one to keep an eye on!

Shock:Force are a couple of DJ’s who have caught my eye recently too, and if you like driving Scott Project style hard trance then these are also worth looking out for!

8. What’s your favourite CD to chill-out to?
Rob Tissera’s new 2009 Summer Mix – I absolutely love it! Its sooo summery and happy and perfect for a good chill out!

9. What track is guaranteed to get you on the dance floor?
My all time favourite track – The Day will come by Quake! I love it!! It doesn’t get played enough these days, but when it does you can guarantee I’ll be stomping my arse off to it!!

10. If you could put a donk on any track, which would it be?
Hmmm now this is a hard one!! Almost every track imaginable has had a donk put on it at some point!! I’d have to say maybe something less obvious like some of the old tidy stuff, a crazy donked up version of “Are you all ready” could be fun!

11. What’s next for Caz Wood?
I have a lot of things planned, both in my personal life and djing career! As you may or may not already know, my lovely other half Wain proposed in June! So we have big wedding plans on the go, with a ceremony in Mauritius planned! DJing wise, I am working on a couple of new projects at the moment, that when revealed might turn a few heads! I am not in a position to disclose what they are quite yet (sorry!) but keep your eyes and ears peeled for news on those!!!

12. Please complete the following sentence. “I, Caz Wood, Love Bounce because…”
Music should be fun and not taken too seriously, bounce keeps life happy and a smile on your face! Get your donk on!!
